Mom Instills Values in Children
A mother’s goal is to instill a great lifelong value system in their child. These values include being responsible, working hard, respecting others, good manners and a compassion for those who are less fortunate. Cammie McInerney, of Mt. Pleasant, has done just that.
Each week, McInerney’s two sons, Joe, 7, and Ryan, 4, are given an allowance for helping out around the house and for being nice to each other. All summer, the two boys collected their allowance and saved the money to use it for something important.
During the scorching, record-setting heat last week, Ryan thought about the people who did not have air conditioning. He wanted to help and told his brother Joe. Ryan suggested that they put their money together and help someone during the extreme temperatures. They decided to buy a fan and donate it to East Cooper Community Outreach.
The boys told their mom about their decision and she was elated! McInerney said it was important that her sons knew about people who were in need here locally. “We know about people in China who are in need. I think it is important that we help people here in our own community. I am so proud that my sons have learned that.”
The children and their mom brought the donation into Linda Grausso, ECCO’s Office Manager. “I was so moved to see that these children chose to use their allowances to help someone else rather than using it for themselves. They bought a fan and even donated the change left over! It is so wonderful to see children encouraged to support the needs of people in their community,” said Linda.
ECCO is dedicated to assisting those who live in situational and generational poverty. Services include free food, clothing, emergency financial assistance and counseling. It also operated a prescription assistance program, a dental clinic and a medical clinic. All services are rendered at no charge to the recipients.
